Discuss holiday items, ideas, and cheer!| For Those of Us Who Care, Saturday is Flag Day | | It may not be much of a deal to most Americans, but Saturday is Flag Day. For all Americans who believe that patriotism is a four-letter word, here just for you is "I am Your Flag."
I was created out of necessity to serve as the emblem of a people whose experiment in nationhood was as unique as the arrangement of my stars and stripes.
I've stood up to time and troubles. I fluttered in the Fall air with General Washington and his loyal French allies at Yorktown. My fabric was shredded by cannonballs from British frigates, in the War of 1812, and I was carried in triumph by Andy Jackson at New Orleans.
I've witnessed turmoil and bitterness, even lost some of my glory in mid-century in a war between brothers, but I was restored as a nation's emblem at Appomattox.
I traveled West with the new frontier. I flew from the headlamps of the Iron Horse in Utah. I was with the prospectors at Sutter's Mill, with the cavalry against cattle rustlers, with the Rough Riders at San Juan Hill.
I crossed the Marne with the doughboys anxious to make the world safe for democracy.
I was with brave GIs storming the beaches at Normandy. I was raised over a shell-pocked... | |

| | Flag Day Ceremony with Fire (picture 2) | | If you did not see picture 1, you will want to go there to read what Flag Day is about. June 14th is the day that old and worn out American flags are retired with dignity, ceremony and honor. Our Girl Scout troop performs this ceremony each year. It is a very spiritual and moving ceremony. This year we retired almost 50 flags that were gathered from our community. It is a lot of work and the process took us several hours. Each flag has to be disassembled. The red stripes are put into the fire first, then the whites stripes. Finally the blue field is given up. My daughter tried to capture some of this with her camera. Please give your opinion of her photo. Also, click on the photo and rate it. Thank you. | |
| | Flag Day Ceremony with Fire | | June 14th is Flag Day in America. On this special day, we take the time to dispose of old and worn out flags with a ceremony. This is a somber ceremony of honor. We take the time to remember our military who serve our country and reflect upon our nations history. As we watch the flags quickly disappear into the fire, we are reminded that our country and our freedom can be consumed, destroyed and gone just as quickly. We are reminded to cherish what we have, to be proud of it and to protect it.On June 14th, my Girl Scout troop performed this ceremony. My daughter tried to capture some of the ceremony with her camera. Please give your opinion of her photo. Remember to click on the photo and rate it. Thank you. | |
| | Flag Day in the United States of America | | The Flag of the United States of America is flown to honor many ideals, people and organizations. For one day a year, 14 Jun, we fly the Stars & Stripes for a different reason.Proudly fly the U.S. Flag today! Not for the troops, the president, the person you wish was president, or even "baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and chevrolet"... Today, Fly the flag to honor the Flag itself! | |

| | Flag day | | so the holidays everyone remembers to say hello and wish you good thoughts. its like you are a bad person if you don't keep contact with friends or atleast people you consider friends or consider you friends. all year they don't return calls and only call when they want or need something or dial your number on accident. i am going off course. the holidays everyone has this warm fuzzy feeling about there loved ones and family. why this xmas and the new year? why can't we have another day? i say flag day should be another day where we exchange gifts and call friends and loved ones to wish them good will. why not? just because the church or the government or craig kilborn haven't told us we should? what if national retail stores started pumping up flag day would it catch on? if oprah lobbied for flag day to be the new xmas would it work? so on june 14th of this year, call a loved one and wish them happy flag day. text message everyone of your friends with a mass message saying happy flag day, show them you care. them you love them, cause if you can't tell them on flag day, when can you? word. | |
| | Family Day | | Family Day is not a federally-sanctioned statutory holdiday, but four provinces have established it... Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. It is the third Monday of February, which happens to be today. So I thought I'd wish everyone who's celebrating it a Happy Family Day. Personally, I think it should be called Heritage Day, because not everybody has a family, or is close to theirs. Or, maybe Flag Day, as the maple leaf flag made its first appearance on February 15, 1965.

| | Did You Fly Your Colors Today? | | Today is Flag Day in the United States. As a rule I put my flag up the weekend before Memorial Day and leave it up through July 4. I have Tiki lights to ensure that it doesn’t fly in the dark. It’s a beautiful flag, and many lives were given to keep the United States free. I think we should proudly display it on every national holiday, but that’s one man’s opinion.Did you display your flag today?Memo to self: If America is your country, regardless of your heritage, you can be proud to fly its colors. © 2008 RJScott
